How to Undeclare a Record in Record Library and delete a Document.

By default when you create a Record Center site the In-Place
Records Management feature is enabled by default which makes any document a ‘record’
– which cannot be deleted if you try to delete a document which is a record you
will get a message like this – “The item cannot be deleted, moved, or renamed because it is
either on hold or is a record which blocks deletion.”

By design the document which is a Record cannot be deleted
explicitly but if in-case you have manually uploaded an incorrect document and you
want to delete it you would need to Undeclare
this document as a record. To achieve this you would need to change some settings
in the Record library. So follow these steps below -

Go to Record library setting and select “Record
declaration settings”
Un-check the check box ‘Automatically declare
items as records when they are added to this list.’ And click ‘OK’
Select the second option ‘Always allow the
manual declaration of the records’
Now select the Compliance Details option from
ECB menu.
Under the Record Status – select ‘Undeclare record’
and click ‘Close’

Now you can delete the document from the Records Library. Make sure to revert to original settings to work as expected and to enable the default upload behavior which makes the document a Record
whenever it’s uploaded to a Record library.

Associating services to Custom Application Proxy Groups in SharePoint 2010

Wictor Wilen wrote a nice article about giving pretty names to custom Application proxy groups in SharePoint.
After giving custom names to your custom application groups you would need an extra step to associate service application proxies to your newly created custom application groups. To take Wictor Wilen’s article on to the next level I decided to write about this additional step that you would require setup your application proxy group for adding service associations.

If you have noticed that after running the command New-SPServiceApplicationProxyGroup the new group doesn’t show any check boxes checked for any of the existing services see the image below.

Configure Service App Association

So to associated service application to your custom named Application proxy group you would need to run additional PowerShell commands called Add-SPServiceApplicationProxyGroupMember

First get the GUID of the service application that you want to associate with your custom application proxy group. Run the Get-SPServiceApplicationProxy command in the PowerShell window.

Get-SPServiceApplicationProxy

Add the proxy group member for the custom application group by running the following command
Add-SPServiceApplicationProxyGroupMember Extranet –Member 4a689711-5208-49b4-a735-fd0605e756df

And now you will see the application proxy group is associated with service.

Configure Service App Member Associated

Similarly you can use Remove-SPServiceApplicationProxyGroupMember command to remove service associations from the custom proxy group.

Many times you would require to update the User fields in SharePoint list item e.g. Assigned To field of a Task list. I came across few people asking about how to do this in Managed Client Object Model of SharePoint 2010. So I created a method which allows you to update the value of the same using Client OM.

How to get Create GUID option in Visual Studio 2010

If you are trying to create a new GUID using Visual Studio 2010 edition, you won’t find the option in Tools menu. Why? Because its available as an External tool, So you have to add GuidGen.exe explicitly moreover it has got new location. So follow the steps below -

Go to Tools menu.
Click on External Tools.
In the dialog box click Add button to Add new tool.
Rename the default name to Create GUID in the Title field.
Enter this path C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0A\bin\guidgen.exe in the Command field and Click Apply and OK

The new location of Guidgen.exe is C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0A\bin\guidgen.exe

Now you can use the Create GUID option from the Tools menu.

How to enable detailed Asp.Net style error in SharePoint 2010

SharePoint 2010 by default shows nice error dialog for all the exceptions. This is cool, but if you are a developer and want to see more detailed information about the error then you need to modify few settings. Today I’ll show you how you can enable Asp.Net style full callstack and detailed error report in Sharepoint 2010. In your web.config change the following settings.

Set mode attibute to ‘Off’

Set the batch and debug attributes to “true”

And lastly set the CallStack attibute to “true”

Recycle the App pool to see the changes in effect.
